Review of Built Like That

by Lauren Grabowski

Alix Olson
Built Like That [Feed the Fire]

Alix Olson's debut album is in a class all by itself. A member of the Nuyorican Poets Society, Olson is known for her progressive commitment to politics, queer activism, and being a radical slam poet.

On Built Like That, she half-talks and half-sings her way into a unique conjunction of song and slam, using eclectic beats and an acoustic guitar.Olson uses a lighthearted conversation about sex to exemplify her activist nature on "Cute for a Girl," a song about lesbian sex with a heterosexual woman: "If it's dick you're after / Check out my top drawer."
On "Cunt Cuntry," Olson envisions a pro-woman, anti-sexist/racist society where both genders would fight for a cunt revolution because "Possessing a cunt matters less than possessing a cunt mentality."
If you're down for some fun and dykey spoken word, along with a melodic beat and some funky guitar playing, this is the album to grab.
